My neighbor and I are planning on trading recipes since we are both feeling a bit ... uninspired. This all came about when she asked what I was going to do with some steaks that were in my cart when we ran into each other at the supermarket. I can't believe that I don't have this recipe posted on the blog since this is a very common meal at the Havlir house. Here it is. The ingredients are simple and as long as the ratio of ingredients are close enough, you can't go wrong.
Ingredients
0.6 - 0.8 pounds of steak (cut into thin strips)
2-3 T soy sauce
1-2 T dark soy sauce
1 T rice cooking wine
3 t cornstarch
3 t cooking oil
2 cloves of garlic (smashed)
1 T garlic bean paste
1.5 bell peppers (cut into strips)
1/2 - 1/3 of an onion, cut into strips
2 springs of spring onion, thinly sliced
salt and pepper to taste
Procedure
1. Marinate the steak in the regular soy sauce and cooking wine for 20 minutes.
2. Add the cornstarch to the meat mixture and mix to coat.
3. In a saute pan, heat up the cooking oil. Toss in the garlic and stir fry for about 15 seconds until fragrant. Add the beef and cook until the steak is browned on the outside. Add the garlic bean paste and stir quickly. Remove the steak from the pan and put in a dish on the side. (It's ok if the steak isn't cooked all the way, you will cook it more later. )
4. Add the onions and bell peppers to the pan, along with some of the dark soy sauce. Cook the veggies for about 1-2 minutes.
5. Add the half-cooked beef, spring onion and stir fry until everything is nice and hot and cooked.
6. Salt and pepper to taste.
