I've been cooking a lot of Asian foods lately because I recently made a trip to the Asian grocery store. While I was there, I saw a small pack of sliced ham hocks (pork legs) and decided to cook the traditional dish of braised ham hocks. This dish is traditionally prepared for someone celebrating a birthday because the legs symbolize a journey and the noodles symbolize long life.
Ingredients
2 pounds of ham hocks (I got 1 in. thick slices, because it cooks quicker)
2/3 c dark soy sauce
1/4 c soy sauce
1/4 c sugar
3 c water
1 packet of chinese 5 spice
or you can substitute the following:
- 3 star anise
- 1/2 stick of cinnamon
- 2 cloves
- 1/2 t cumin
- 1 inch section of ginger
1. In a pan of hot oil, sear the ham hocks until they are slightly browned.
2. Put the ham hocks with the rest of the ingredients and braise for about 2 hours.
3. Serve with noodles and blanched greens.
